Sharanam is one of the most innovative new releases in the ever-evolving genre of spiritual music featuring Sanskrit mantras. A record of rapturous, dance-floor-friendly tracks fueled with blissed-out beats and sultry, meditative grooves, Sharanam appeals to both yoga practitioners and club DJs.

The album is the luminous solo debut of singer, violinist and yogini Sharon Gannon, former member of the innovative art rock band Audio Letter and cofounder of the world-renowned Jivamuki Yoga Method.

Collaborating with Parisian producer/composer Ferenz Kallos (Gypsy Kings,Mercedes Bahleda), Gannon recorded the album in Woodstock, New York, with Kallos handling the bulk of the instrumentation and arrangements. Guest artists appearing on the album include David Life on vocals and theremin, cellist Noah Hoffeld (Bebel Gilberto, Mark Ribot) and trance DJ Fabian Alsultany on bass.

Sharanam features three interpretations of the beloved mantra "Lokah Samastah Sukinoh Bhavantu," including a propulsive remix courtesy of the Dum Dum Project's Sean Dinsmore. The ethereally expansive "Govinda Fly" and "Hare Krishna" showcase Gannon's celestial, operatic soprano, a beautiful voice imbued with the kinetic, rock and roll grit of Diamanda Galas, Cocteau Twins' Elizabeth Fraser and Kate Bush.

Sharanam is a Sanskrit word meaning "refuge, a safe place." Mantras create a place of refuge by revealing the ever-present sanctuary within one's own heart.

REVIEWS

"Of all human endeavors, music is perhaps closest to representing the world of the spirit. In music we attempt to render into form what is essentially formless, we attempt to describe what is beyond description, to frame silence, to measure infinity. This work has been Sharon's mission not only in her practice of Yoga but also in the practice of music, where she applies the same dedication to the pursuit of the ineffable as she brings to her yoga practice, inspired, daring and essential." -- Sting

"Enchanting chanting! Unique and inspired, Sharon Gannon is no ordinary chantress. On this beautiful album she breathes new life into these ancient Sanskrit mantras." - Deva Premal & Miten

"When I am with Sharon I feel myself surrounded by her love and devotion. When I listen to her music it is the same experience--a door to a world of endless light is opened." - Donna De Lory

Sharon Gannon is a vocalist, violinist and founding member of the art rock collective Audio Letter, whose debut It Is This It Is Not This was praised by Rolling Stone as a "philosophical and musical stew different than any other aural communication in Seattle." With contributions from Run DMC's Reverend Run, Cheb i Sabbah and the late Don Cherry, the album was remixed and re-released as Neti Neti in 2003. *Yoga Journal* called the result "luminous and ethereal" whilst Billboard noted its "flawless musicianship." The daughter of an opera singer, Gannon is a John Zorn-influenced veteran of punk bands (Pysche-Run) and electronic collectives. She collaborated with the Beastie Boys' Mike D on Neti Neti and Bill Laswell's Asana II. She worked with Jai Uttal on MC Yogi's groundbreaking debut Elephant Power, sang backing vocals for Wynn Paris, Shyam Das and David Newman, and took a turn as featured singer with Sean Dinsmore's Dum Dum Project. Gannon produced Jai Ma, a collection celebrating female singers including Donna De Lory and Deva Premal, for White Swan Records' acclaimed Yoga Masters series. Notably, Gannon is a world-renowned yogini and author who co-founded the internationally influential Jivamukti Yoga Centers and Jivamukti Yoga Method with partner David Life. A choreographer, poet and painter, Gannon is also an animal-rights activist and outspoken advocate of ethical vegetarianism and its link to world peace.
